Hi!
My name is Chet and I’m a freelance IT Consultant in Los Angeles, California. This is where I’m writing down weird and/or helpful things that I know I won’t remember. IT is more about access to information than “having” information. It is pointless to remember too many details in the ever changing world of IT. Understanding concepts and systems is important. If you have that, looking up information is easy. This site is just about the information I have collected.
An unhealthy love and fascination with computers and technology started with a Mattel Aquarius that somehow found it’s way into our home. Of course I was too young to know anything about it. But after watching my sister simply copy code from the manual into it, I learned to do the same. For the next several years, computers to me meant gaming. Whether it was our Apple ][ or our 8088XT, I was all about acquiring games and tweaking the system to run them faster, add more hardware, or struggle to keep them running as long as possible.
Anytime I found a disc I loaded it up and tried to learn to use whatever programs were on them. Thank goodness viruses weren’t a real issue then! I learned dBase long before I would understand why anybody would want to use a spreadsheet or even what a spreadsheet would be used for.
By the time I was in junior high, I was known as the guy who could make your Red October run, smooth out your MS Flight Simulator and add controllers and hardware to your computer if you could convince your mom to buy it for you… which I was also good at helping my friends do.
I’m not sure why my mother ordered a Hayes 2400 Baud modem but one came in the mail one day. I don’t think my parents had any idea… (TBC).
